Whitetop
Mtn Expedition
How about a nice trip to the mountain?
With setup in 15 minutes or less this
portable setup was a breeze. We do have to be
thankful for the years of trial and error.
Knowing your environment is critical, on prior
trips to whitetop we found ourselves
unprepared for 30-40 MPH winds. Tonight, winds
were calm and the itty bitty gnats
were the "kings" of the mountain.
Intermod
was pretty harsh, most of our "easy"
scanning occurred on UHF.
There was a surpising amount of interference from
a nearby
STARS site, that site is pumping out some RF, of
course we did have a 40ft antenna up!
Just a few new
ones (below) that we have yet to figure
out.

Radio Destiny
The Wide Area Feed broadcast (simulcast) via Radio
Destiny has been discontinued due to
security concerns, resource issues, and incompatibility
with mobile devices. This
method will be on standby in the event of issues with
RadioReference's server or
a prolonged outage. The standard and mobile version will
remain. If you have never used these before or
need assistance, please contact us at scannerfood@gmail.com .
Scannerfood on Youtube
We uploaded a video of the
recent storms in Abingdon; We'll include some videos of
our next outing and setup.

Media Section Changes
Our media section now has a page 1 and 2 to reduce the
page load time.
Pending files include:
Grundy Officer Shooting
Glade Spring Tornado
Additional Weather Related Comms
Once complete, these will be announced via our twitter
stream.
Unknowns Updated
Yet another update!, our unknowns database has been updated
and the reporting form has been simplified.
We appreciate our submitters for sending in clues and
confirmation of several of the frequencies. Excluding
some
of the new ones from Whitetop, we are up to 276 unknowns,
and a dozen or so mislicensed frequencies.
This summer our plans are to focus on some of the
mysteries and utilize directional antennas and
attenuators
to reduce the reception area.
Secure Access Area
We're piloting a secure area for more sensitive frequency
and systems information. This among collaborative
research, and shared
research from neighboring states, typically contains
information once only shared on paper. There is the old
saying "don't put this on the
internet", well at least this way the sharing of
resources can be limited. Rest assured there will be more
than enough access for everyone, and
we will continue to provide STARS support on a individual
inquiry basis for free at the time being.
VSP - New Helicopter
The Virginia State Police has
purchased a new Helicopter to replace the aging
BO105 for operations out of the Virginia
Highlands Airport in Abingdon.
The French made Eurocopter EH-145 weighs 2 tons
empty and has a service weight of its own weight
in fuel, passengers, and/or tactical gear. With a
range of over 400 miles and a top speed around
155 MPH; this asset will make emergency medical
and law enforcement capabilities second to none.
At a unit price of five and half million dollars,
we expect this bird to have state of the art FLIR
and advanced communications capabilities.
This helicopter carries the callsign
"Medflight II" and can typically be
heard on 462.950 Med 9 communicating with
Virginia Central. |
